PCUUC Outreach Opportunities

General Goal: Through history, Unitarian Universalists have fought for social justice and offered aid to those in need. We try to live up to our heritage by helping to put our Unitarian Universalist principals into practice in the greater community and around the world.

Outreach Opportunities:

Habitat for Humanity

Help build simple, decent and affordable housing for people living in inadequate housing. We are assigned to a “team” with other workers from other organizations. Volunteers with building skills are highly desired and those without skills will be taught.

Neighborhood House—provides basic needs and other support for its residents in times of crisis. It serves Rochester, Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills residents. Volunteers are needed in their following divisions: 1. Clothes Closet—provides hundreds of low-income residents with gently used clothing and small household necessities. Volunteers are needed to unpack, sort and hang clothing, and help customers. There is a semi-annual Attic Sale. 2. Cancer Support—offers two support services for people and families dealing with cancer. One of these services is a Cancer Resource Notebook which is a collection of many brochures from dozens of organizations. Volunteers meet four times a year to assemble the notebooks. 3. Holiday Food Baskets-church members collect food for the needy at Holiday-time. 4. Giving Tree--select a Christmas Gift tag at church, purchase the item and return it to church unwrapped. It will be delivered to a neighboring church that hosts shopping days with volunteers from various organizations assisting.

Samaritan House—provides basic needs for residents in times of crisis. Serves Northern Macomb County. Volunteers are needed for Holiday Food Baskets and their Gifting Tree during the Holidays.

Women’s Survival Center—empowers women and families to attain economic autonomy and a sense of self-worth. Volunteers are needed in their childcare center to provide structured playtime to preschool children and younger.

Lighthouse—Help the hungry by packing Thanksgiving food bags at All Saints Church in Pontiac the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

CROP Walk—walk with hundreds of others to help raise money and awareness to help stop hunger locally and worldwide. Usually for first Sunday in October.

South Oakland Shelter—assist a neighboring church in preparing and serving a meal for the homeless. Usually in the Spring.

Baldwin Church & Center--help serve a meal to the homeless. This year-Mother’s Day.

Walton Road Clean-Up—our church has adopted a stretch of road to keep clean for the community. Help is needed quarterly.

Kenya Aids Orphans—help provide tuition, books and other fees for specific school-aged orphans so they can complete their education.
